PERSONALITY STYLES INVENTORY(1)
Letter Definitions

Personality style preferences are similar to having a preference for using your right hand or your left hand. As you continue to show preference for one hand or the other, you develop greater ability with it. The same is true with your personality preferences. You have both, you just prefer to use one or the other more.

As you read the explanations below, the extent to which you behave one way or the other is contingent upon the extent to which you showed preference on the inventory.

How you interact with someone else in a manner that they would find comfortable is also contingent upon how lopsided they are in their preferences. The more they prefer one style over the other, the more important it becomes for you to be attentive to the needs of that style. To ignore those needs will cause the other person a feeling of being uncomfortable with you.

E / I: This continuum deals with how you are energized. People who prefer "Extroversion" gain energy through interacting with people. Whereas, people who prefer "Introversion" are energized by spending time by themselves processing the input of the day.
Extrovert
Introvert

Extroversion means a preference for interacting with the outer world of things and people. In fact, extroverts meet people easily and are good at greeting people.

Extroverts like variety and action. They like interruptions, phone or in-person - always an open door. Very often they take the "act-think-act again" approach to life.

Do something, right or wrong, but do something. They are very impatient with long, slow jobs and prefer to act quickly

Introversion means a preference for relating to the inner world of ideas than to the outer world of things and people. They like quiet time for concentration and don't appreciate interruptions. They don't have the same "need" to be around or interact with people as extrovert do. They have trouble remembering names and faces.

Introverts like to process information, either by thinking about it or getting a feel for it, before taking action or delivering their conclusions. Sometimes they go over things in such depth in their minds, they think they have done it or communicated it, when in fact, they have not.

They would rather write a letter to communicate than pick up the phone and call. Introverts like silence to think, and they believe it is rude and inconsiderate when people won't let them respond.

S / N: This continuum deals with how you take data in and process it. People who prefer Sensing take in information through their five senses. People who prefer iNtuition, take in information in "big picture" clusters that have meaning.
Sensing
iNtuition

Sensing means a preference for working with known facts rather than to look for new possibilities and relationships. People who prefer sensing pay attention to data coming in through the five senses.

Sensors dislike new problems unless there are standard ways to solve them. They like established ways of doing things and enjoy using skills already learned more than they enjoy learning new ones.

Sensors seldom make errors of fact and tend to be good at precise work. They are patient with routine details. They prefer to have things explained in a logical sequential and detailed manner so that they know exactly what is expected of them.

Sensors are very much "present" time oriented and are practical, down to earth people with their feet planted firmly on the ground.

When Sensors create, they use the knowledge and tools that are currently available to them. This is just as creative but unlike the iNtuitors who are prone to create starting with only their imagination and nothing else.

iNtuition means having a preference for looking at the meanings, relationships and possibilities of information rather than looking at the facts themselves. People with this preference take in information and look at it through a prism.

They don't see facts as facts, but only as what they might mean. First, they like to get the 'big picture." Then they can mentally jump around to fill in the voids.

They like the novel and unusual. Most enjoy the science fiction and/or the science of the future.

Intuitors like solving new problems and dislike routine activities.

They would rather reinvent the wheel than use one that is already available. They form the core of the dreamers, inventors and creators. They like to use insights and imagination.

Sometimes these "future time" oriented people are said to live in "la-la land." They often have their heads in the clouds.

T / F: This dimension looks at how we make decisions - impersonal weighing of the pro's and con's or through the use of personal human values to guide the choice.
Thinkers
Feelers

Thinking means a preference for basing judgments more on impersonal analysis and logic than on personal values.

Thinkers do not show emotion readily and are often uncomfortable dealing with people's feelings.

They tend to be brief, concise and businesslike.

They can be intellectually critical and objective and thus step on other people's toes without even knowing it.

They can work well without harmony and are best convinced by cool impersonal, weigh the pro's and con's, balance sheet, types of reasoning.

Feeling means a preference for basing judgment more on personal values then on impersonal analysis and logic.

Feelers tend to be very aware of other people and their feelings and enjoy pleasing people, even on unimportant things.

They value harmony and are most interested in how a decision will affect others, how committed they will be in supporting it, and are therefore very interested in your values.

They are friendly and sociable, always paying attention to the amenities to make you comfortable.

They like doing the "right thing."

J / P: This continuum looks at how you prefer to live your life on a day-to-day basis. Half the population prefer a planned, structured, and scheduled lifestyle whereas, others prefer a more spontaneous, flexible, go with the flow lifestyle in which they can always keep their options open.
Judger
Perceiver

Judging means having a preference for a planned, decided, orderly way of life more than a flexible, spontaneous one.

Judgers work best when they can plan their work and work the plan. They like to get things settled and finished.

They like making decisions and like getting closure. Once a decision is made, its time to move on.

Everything is organized and in its place.

Perceiving means having a preference for a flexible, spontaneous way of life, more than the confines of a locked-in schedule. They like to keep their options open.

Perceivers are like sponges, always taking in information. They love to learn.

They can handle crises well and can take risks, but seem disorganized and have difficulty making decisions.

They like to "wing it." In general, they will start too many projects and have difficulty finishing any of them.
